CLT Verbal Reasoning: how to read for it
40 questions in 40 minutes on passages from the books the CLT is known for: literature, philosophy and religion, science, and the founding documents.
Updated October 29, 2026
What is on it
- Literature: fiction and poetry from the classic canon.
- Philosophy and religion: argument-heavy passages where you follow a line of reasoning.
- Science: a passage with a chart or table to read alongside it.
- Historical and founding documents: given as a pair of passages to compare.
- Questions ask for the main idea, details, the meaning of a word in context, the author's purpose and tone, what the passage implies, and how two passages agree or differ.
How to read for it (our advice)
- Read the passage, not just the questions. Older prose rewards close reading. Note in a few words what each paragraph does.
- Prove every answer. Point to the line that supports your choice. If you cannot, it is probably a trap that sounds right.
- Words in context: cover the word, put in your own word from the sentence, then pick the choice closest to yours. Common words often carry an older meaning.
- Paired passages: sum up each author's view in one line before the comparison questions.
- Charts: read the title, the axes and the units before the question. Answer from what the chart shows, not from what you know.
- Build vocabulary as you go. Keep a list of words you meet in your reading and review it a few times a week.
- Pace: 40 minutes for 40 questions, including the reading. Don't let one hard question cost you three easy ones.
