CLT Quantitative Reasoning

CLT math: Quantitative Reasoning, without a calculator

40 questions in 45 minutes, and no calculator on any of them. The math is built to be done by hand, so the skill is choosing the fast way.

What is on it

  • About 10 algebra questions, 14 geometry and trigonometry, and 16 logic and word problems. The CLT does not publish this split on its site; these are the figures prep companies report from its technical report.
  • Algebra: linear equations and inequalities, systems, quadratics, functions, exponents and radicals.
  • Geometry and trigonometry: angles, triangles (including right-triangle trig), circles, area and volume, coordinates.
  • Logic and word problems: rates, ratios and percents, counting and probability, sequences, and reasoning with statements.

Working without a calculator (our advice)

  • Plug in numbers. When the choices have variables, pick a simple value (say x = 2), work out the answer, and test each choice.
  • Work backward from the choices. For "which value works" questions, try the middle choice first; it tells you whether to go up or down.
  • Estimate before you calculate. Often only one choice is the right size.
  • Keep numbers friendly. Factor and cancel before multiplying. Leave π and square roots as they are until the end.
  • Know the formulas by heart: area and circumference of a circle, the Pythagorean theorem and the 3-4-5 and 5-12-13 triangles, the 30-60-90 and 45-45-90 triangles, SOH CAH TOA, slope and the equation of a line, and volume of a box, cylinder and sphere. Don't count on a formula sheet.
  • Pace: 45 minutes for 40 questions. Skip a long one, finish the rest, and come back.
