Comparison
Paired passages, or two views inside one passage, are compared: where the authors agree, where they differ, and how one would answer the other.
- Read passage 1 and state its claim. Read passage 2 and state its claim.
- Decide the relationship: agree, disagree, or agree with a qualification.
- For "how would author 2 respond," use author 2's own reasoning, not your own.
Q. One author says liberty requires few laws; another says liberty requires good laws that protect the weak. On what do they agree?
Answer Liberty is worth protecting.
They differ about laws but share the value. Agreement questions often hide in the shared starting point.
- A choice that is true of one author only is the trap on "both" questions.
- Authors on the test rarely disagree completely. Look for the qualified answer.
