Data and the text

Every CLT reading section has a science passage with a table or graph. These questions ask what the figure shows, or which claim in the passage the figure supports.

How to do it
  1. Read the title, the column headings and the units before the numbers.
  2. Say the pattern in plain words: "as cats go up, field-mice go down."
  3. Find the sentence in the passage that makes the same claim. The answer must agree with both the figure and the text.
Example

Q. A table shows a plain candle in still air losing 0.2 g of wax and one in a draft losing 2.6 g. Which claim does it support?

Answer A draft makes a candle run down its side.

The only thing that changed was the draft, and the wax lost went up a lot. A claim about the shape of the candle is not tested by these two rows.

Traps
  • A choice that is true by the passage but not shown in the figure (or the other way round), when the question asks for both.
  • Reading a pattern from two rows that differ in more than one way.
