Detail

Detail questions ask what the passage actually says. The answer is written in the text, usually in different words.

How to do it
  1. Use the line or paragraph reference, or scan for the key noun in the question.
  2. Read a few lines before and after the spot. Details are often explained in the next sentence.
  3. Match the choice to the text's meaning, not to its exact words.
  4. Prove it before you pick it: put your finger on the sentence that makes the choice true. If you cannot point to it, it is not the answer.
Example

Q. According to the passage, why did the old candle-makers prefer some fuels over others?

Answer They wanted a fuel that would form a neat cup and not run down the side.

Find where fuels are compared and paraphrase the reason given there.

Traps
  • A choice that repeats exact words from the wrong part of the passage is a classic trap.
  • Do not use outside knowledge, even when it is correct. Only the passage counts.
