PSAT/NMSQT practice and prep
The PSAT/NMSQT is the SAT's shorter-scale sibling and the qualifying test for National Merit. Owl gives you full practice tests in the real format and a plan built around the one number National Merit uses: the Selection Index.
Updated October 29, 2026
The test, in one table
| Section | Questions | Time | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading and Writing | 54 (two modules of 27) | 64 minutes | 160 to 760 |
| Math | 44 (two modules of 22) | 70 minutes | 160 to 760 |
| Total | 98 | 2 hours 14 minutes | 320 to 1520 |
A calculator is allowed on the whole Math section. The score report also gives the NMSC Selection Index, on a scale of 48 to 228. The fall 2026 in-school window was October 1 to 30, 2026.
What Owl gives you
- PSAT practice tests in the real format. Two sections, four modules, 98 questions, the same timing and an adaptive second module, scored 320 to 1520 with a Selection Index. Your first one is free.
- A National Merit planner. Pick your state and grade. Owl-y shows your state's past Semifinalist cutoffs, the section scores that reach your target, and a month-by-month plan to the October that counts.
- Skills ranked by index points. Reading and Writing counts twice in the index, so Owl-y weighs each skill by how often it appears, how often you miss it and its weight in the index.
- Every question explained. The same original Reading and Writing and Math bank as Owl's SAT practice, with why each wrong choice is wrong.
- A parent view. The index trend, the gap to the cutoff and the skills worth the most points, on the family dashboard (with College Test Prep).

Questions families ask
Is the PSAT/NMSQT the same as the SAT?
It has the same two sections and the same digital, two-module format, with the same question types. It is scored 320 to 1520 instead of 400 to 1600, and it is shorter on the very hardest questions. Practice for one is practice for the other.
Which PSAT counts for National Merit?
For students finishing high school in four years, the PSAT/NMSQT taken in October of 11th grade. A 10th-grade PSAT/NMSQT is a useful rehearsal but does not enter the program. NMSC's guide lists the rules for students on other schedules.
How is the Selection Index calculated?
College Board: double your Reading and Writing score, add your Math score, then divide by 10. A 700 in Reading and Writing and a 740 in Math gives (1,400 + 740) ÷ 10 = 214.
Are Owl's practice scores official?
No. They are estimates from Owl's original practice questions, written to match the test's format and skills. Only College Board reports official PSAT/NMSQT scores.
