How PSAT scores lead to National Merit
National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) uses one number from the PSAT/NMSQT to pick its honorees: the Selection Index. Here is how it is computed, what each level means, and what the last four years' cutoffs looked like.
Updated October 29, 2026
The Selection Index
College Board: double your Reading and Writing score, add your Math score, then divide by 10. With both sections on a 160 to 760 scale, the index runs from 48 to 228.
Because Reading and Writing counts twice, every 10 points there is worth 2 index points, and every 10 points in Math is worth 1. For most students, Reading and Writing is the cheaper place to find points.
(2 × 700 + 700) ÷ 10 = 210.
From test taker to Merit Scholar
- 1. Take the PSAT/NMSQT in 11th gradeStudents enter the program through the October test of their junior year. In the 2027 program, over 1.2 million juniors in about 20,000 high schools entered.
- 2. Commended StudentA Selection Index at or above a national level (208 for the class of 2027) earns a Letter of Commendation. NMSC honors about 50,000 high scorers a year.
- 3. SemifinalistThe highest scorers in each state: more than 16,000 students, fewer than 1 percent of seniors. Each state's number follows its share of the nation's graduating seniors, so each state has its own cutoff.
- 4. FinalistAbout 95 percent of Semifinalists advance (more than 15,000). They need an outstanding academic record, a school official's endorsement, an essay, and SAT or ACT scores that confirm the PSAT/NMSQT. Finalists are told in February.
- 5. Merit ScholarAbout half of Finalists win one of about 6,700 scholarships worth about $24 million: 2,500 National Merit $2500 Scholarships, about 700 corporate-sponsored and some 3,500 college-sponsored awards. Winners are announced from April to July.

Train for the index, not just the score
Owl's National Merit planner turns your state's past cutoffs into a target, shows the section scores that reach it, ranks your skills by the index points they hold, and lays out the months to the October that counts. PSAT practice tests in the real format keep the index honest.
Questions families ask
What PSAT score do you need for National Merit?
It depends on your state. For the class of 2027, Semifinalist cutoffs ran from 208 to 223, and the national Commended level was 208. These are Selection Index numbers, not total scores.
What is the difference between Commended and Semifinalist?
Commended Students clear one national Selection Index level (208 for the class of 2027); they receive a Letter of Commendation. Semifinalists are the highest scorers in each state, more than 16,000 students, and only Semifinalists can become Finalists and compete for National Merit Scholarships.
How do you become a National Merit Finalist?
A Semifinalist completes an application with the school showing an outstanding academic record, is endorsed by a school official, writes an essay, and earns SAT or ACT scores that confirm the PSAT/NMSQT. NMSC expected more than 15,000 of the 2027 program's Semifinalists to become Finalists.
How much is a National Merit Scholarship?
The National Merit $2500 Scholarship is a single payment of $2,500. Corporate-sponsored and college-sponsored awards vary by sponsor. In the 2027 program NMSC expected to offer about 6,700 scholarships worth about $24 million in all.
Does the 10th-grade PSAT count?
For students finishing high school in four years, no: the 11th-grade PSAT/NMSQT is the qualifying test. A 10th-grade test is the best rehearsal there is.
