Structure

Structure questions ask how the passage is organized: problem and solution, claim and support, chronology, comparison, objection and reply.

How to do it
  1. Use your five-word paragraph jobs from the first read.
  2. Line them up in order: "claim, example, objection, reply."
  3. Pick the choice that describes those steps in that order.
Example

Q. A passage defines a problem, considers two remedies, rejects the first as too costly and the second as impossible, then proposes controlling the problem's effects. The structure is...

Answer a problem, two rejected solutions, and a third approach.

Each step of the choice must match a step of the passage, in order.

Traps
  • A choice with the right steps in the wrong order is wrong.
  • Be wary of choices that mention a "story" or "data" if the passage has none.
