You are asked what a word means as it is used in one sentence. Old passages often use common words in an older or less common sense.
- Cover the word and read the whole sentence, and the one before it.
- Say your own word for the blank before looking at the choices.
- Put each choice into the sentence. The right one keeps the sentence's meaning and tone.

- A choice can be a real synonym of the word and still not fit this sentence.
