CLT Grammar/Writing: the rules that matter

40 questions in 35 minutes. You fix or improve underlined parts of passages, so it is part grammar, part good writing.

What is on it

  • Passages on philosophy and religion, science, a historical profile, and modern thinkers or issues.
  • Each underlined part has four versions, usually including "NO CHANGE". Some questions ask about a whole sentence or paragraph: adding, cutting or moving it.
  • The skills: punctuation (commas, semicolons, colons, dashes, apostrophes), agreement (subject and verb, pronoun and noun), sentence structure (fragments, run-ons, modifiers, parallel lists), verb tense, word choice and concision, and transitions.

How to answer (our advice)

  • Read the whole sentence, not just the underlined part. Most errors depend on the words around it.
  • Name the rule first. Before looking at the choices, ask what is being tested: a comma? agreement? tense?
  • Shorter is often better. When choices are all correct, the clearest and shortest one usually wins, unless it drops meaning.
  • "NO CHANGE" is a real answer. Choose it when the original breaks no rule and reads well.
  • Transitions: decide how the two ideas relate (contrast, cause, example, addition) before picking the word.
  • Pace: 35 minutes for 40 questions is under a minute each. Grammar questions are quick when you know the rule, which leaves time for the writing questions.
