Short lessons, living books, gentle tests
Charlotte Mason (1842 to 1923) taught with living books, narration, copywork and dictation, in short lessons that leave the afternoon free. Owl will never replace a living book. But a few of its tools fit her way well: ten-minute pieces, classic texts, words learned from the page. Here they are, with the tests kept gentle and last.

Ten minutes is a full lesson here. Stop while the attention is still bright.
Spelling from the page, in short lessons
Charlotte Mason taught spelling from what a child read: look at the word until you can see it with your eyes shut, then write it. Owl's spelling does just that with your own list. Type in the words from this week's reading; each one shows for three seconds, then hides, and your child spells it. The themed lists are read aloud instead, in a recorded voice.

Questions people ask
Is Owl a Charlotte Mason curriculum?
No. A Charlotte Mason education is built on living books, narration and time outdoors. Owl offers a few short, focused tools that fit beside it, and the reading library's classic texts can feed a narration.
Charlotte Mason did not believe in drills. Why practice?
Her short lessons asked for full attention and exact work, such as careful looking before dictation. Owl's rounds are short on purpose, and you choose the words. Use what helps and leave the rest.
Does my state require testing?
It depends on the state. HSLDA keeps a summary of each state's law, and our homeschool testing guide explains the options.
Which of these are free?
Spelling, Math Facts, Owl Thinkers, the Daily Grammar Fix, Vocabulary, the Reading library, Latin practice and the grade checkups are free to use, with no account needed to start. Each test also has free practice; the full study plans and extra practice tests are in the paid plans.
