For classical families, at home or at school

Free tools and tests, sorted by stage

Classical education teaches in three stages, often called the trivium: grammar, logic and rhetoric. Here is everything on Owl sorted the same way. In each stage the free tools come first, then the tests that make sense at that age.

Stage 1 · Grades K to 5, about ages 5 to 10

Grammar stage: the building blocks

Young children love to memorize, chant and collect. This is the time for spelling, math facts and the parts of a sentence, done a little every day.

Questions people ask

What are the three stages?

The grammar, logic and rhetoric stages come from the trivium, the first three of the medieval liberal arts. Dorothy Sayers matched them to a child's growth in her 1947 essay "The Lost Tools of Learning", and many classical schools and homeschools follow her lead: facts and memory first, then reasoning, then expression.

Which of these are free?

Spelling, Math Facts, Owl Thinkers, the Daily Grammar Fix, Vocabulary, the Reading library, Latin practice and the grade checkups are free to use, with no account needed to start. Each test also has free practice; the full study plans and extra practice tests are in the paid plans.

Should my young child prepare for the CLT3-8?

Classic Learning Initiatives, which makes it, says practice is not recommended, because the test is meant to show where a child is now. A short checkup to meet the format is enough. The year's work is the real preparation.

Is the HSPT only for Catholic schools?

It is used mostly by Catholic high schools for admission and placement. Check with the schools on your list; some ask for the ISEE or SSAT instead.

Is Owl connected with the CLT or any test maker?

No. Owl Test Prep is independent. CLT and Classic Learning Test are trademarks of Classic Learning Initiatives, which does not endorse this site. The same goes for the other tests named here.
