How to practice spelling words

  • Hear it, then spell it. Spelling from a word you hear is the real skill. In Owl Test Prep, Owl-y says each word and uses it in a sentence, and you type it.
  • Short and often. Ten words a day beats fifty on Friday night. Owl-y keeps a streak so the habit sticks.
  • Missed words come back. A word you miss comes back later that day, then again over the next week, until it sticks.
  • Look at the tricky part. Most misses are one spot: a double letter, a silent letter, an ending. Say it slowly and find that spot.

Questions people ask

How many spelling words should a pre-k student learn a week?

Most classrooms use a list of about 10 to 20 words a week. A few minutes a day, with missed words coming back later, works better than one long session before the test.

Where do these pre-k words come from?

They are Owl Test Prep's own word bank for pre-k, chosen for the level and checked by hand. Your school's list may differ; you can type your own list into Owl Test Prep too.

Can my child hear the words read aloud?

Yes. In Owl Test Prep, Owl-y says each word and a sentence with it, then checks the spelling. It is free, with no account.
