Inequalities

Solve inequalities like equations, with one rule: multiplying or dividing by a negative number flips the sign.

How to do it
  1. Solve step by step, watching for a negative coefficient.
  2. For "between" statements (−3 < x < 5), do the same thing to all three parts.
  3. Test a number from your answer in the original inequality.
Example

Q. Solve −2x + 5 > 11.

Answer x < −3

−2x > 6, then divide by −2 and flip: x < −3. Check x = −4: 8 + 5 = 13 > 11.

Traps
  • Forgetting to flip the sign when dividing by a negative.
  • Mixing up "at least" (≥) and "more than" (>) when translating words.
