Organization

Organization questions ask where a sentence belongs, or which sentence best opens or closes a paragraph.

How to do it
  1. Look for pointer words in the sentence: "this," "these," "such," "then," "also." They must follow what they point to.
  2. An opening sentence introduces the paragraph's topic; a closing sentence finishes its point or leads to the next.
  3. Try the sentence in the proposed spot and read the two sentences around it.
Example

Q. Where should "This simple fact made the clock a matter of life and death" go?

Answer Right after the sentence explaining that sailors could not find their longitude without an accurate clock.

"This simple fact" must follow the fact it refers to.

Traps
  • A sentence that answers a question must come after the question.
  • Time words ("later," "at first," "finally") must fit the order of events.
