The SHSAT at a glance
- What it decides: seats at eight of New York City's nine specialized high schools. LaGuardia admits by audition instead.
- Who takes it: NYC students in grades 8 and 9.
- The test: English Language Arts (revising and editing, then reading) and Math, in three hours. Since fall 2025 it is taken on a computer.
- No calculator, and a wrong answer costs nothing, so answer every question.
How Owl's practice works
- 57 English and 57 math questions, the length of the long-standing form, with typed answers on some math questions.
- Computer-test rules by default: answer each question before moving on, and go back only within a reading passage.
- Extended time if you have it on the real test. Your results show which timing you used.
- A count of right answers, never a predicted cutoff: each school's cutoff changes every year.
