HSPT scores

HSPT scores and percentiles, explained

The HSPT report has a few different numbers. Here is what each one means, and how to read your child's report.

The numbers on the report

  • Standard score (200 to 800) for each section. 500 is exactly average for the eighth graders who took the test in the national sample. It is not a count of right answers.
  • National percentile (1 to 99). The share of the national sample your child scored above. A 70th percentile beat 70 out of 100. The middle third, 33 to 66, is the average range.
  • Local percentile. The same idea, against the students who took the test for the same school or diocese.
  • Cognitive Skills Quotient. Built from Verbal and Quantitative, the two reasoning sections.
  • Composite. The overall score from all five sections. Basic Skills are Reading, Mathematics and Language.
  • Grade equivalents for Reading, Mathematics and Language.

What is a good HSPT score?

There is no passing score. Each school decides how it uses the HSPT, often for admission, scholarships and class placement together. Scores near the 50th percentile are average; many selective schools look for the upper percentiles, and scholarship cutoffs, when a school has them, are usually higher still. Ask the school what it looks at: some weigh the composite, some look at Reading and Math for placement.

How Owl Test Prep estimates your score

The real norms are not public, so every score in the app is clearly labeled an estimate. Owl-y weighs the last 40 answers in each section by difficulty, turns that into an estimated standard score on the 200 to 800 scale, and shows the estimated national percentile beside it. Take the diagnostic to get your first estimates, then a full timed practice test to see all five sections together.
